| TRANSITION MONITORING GROUP (TMG) |
Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) is the foremost election observer coalition in Nigeria. It was founded in 1998 and has 60 member organizations located in the six geographical zones of Nigeria. In the last five years its membership has increased to over 170 groups. The coalition started its activities with the monitoring of 1999 Nigerian general elections, organized voter education projects across the country to encourage participation, proper voting procedures, peace education and encouraged participation of women. The TMG promotes democratic governance in Nigeria. In recognition of its significant contribution to the success of the transition to civil rule in 1999, the TMG won a Democracy Award in 1999, given by the Washington - based national Endowment for Democracy on May 25th, 1999. |

| MISSION STATEMENT |
The mission of the group is to promote the development and practice of democratic values and to monitor democratic institutions and the electoral process.

| AIM AND OBJECTIVES |
| The aims and objectives of the group include the following: |

To develop integrity in the electoral process by monitoring and reporting on the prosecution of the political programme. |

To observe and monitor the conduct of elections in Nigeria. |

To promote accountability, transparency and responsiveness among political leaders and in the public sector. |

To encourage and promote participation of citizens especially of women and marginalized groups in the political process. |

To assist in capacity building for member organizations. |

To provide civic education and democratic capacity building for public institutions. |

To encourage wider dissemination of voter education materials. |

To lobby and campaign for the promulgation of human rights and people oriented legislation. |

To assist in mediating and resolving disputes arising within the electoral proces. |
